Interesting issue.
About the first article, I believe that the principle issue of the Z scale is neither the lack of details of control gear in steamers nor the oversized pantographs in electric locomotives.
The elephant in the room (the locution could not be more appropriate) is the enormous and ugly fishhook used as coupler in European rolling stock.
This is what non-Zetties look with disdain in Märklin models.

Once you take the elephant out, (which myself and others have done with custom made couplers) the models are appreciated and even admired.
